Amniotic membrane allografts facilitate the short-term success of surgical procedures as well as the long-term stability of the eye surface. Amniotic membrane is the innermost lining of the placenta. It contains natural growth factors and cytokines which are integral to the healthy development of the fetus. When implanted on the ocular surface, amniotic membrane promotes faster wound repair and wound healing. By using amniotic membrane instead of a patient’s own tissue pain and discomfort is reduced, complications limited, surgical time reduced and surgical outcomes optimized.
