Tissue Donated for Research can Brighten Lives WHY RESEARCH? Research using donated tissues helps save and enhance lives. Tissues recovered for research and education can be recovered from donors with Alzheimer's, cancer, liver disease, congestive heart failure and many other conditions that would not ordinarily be suitable for transplant use. These donated tissues have many potential uses to help others. This includes developing and testing new methods of transplantation to improve surgical outcomes, reduce pain and shorten recovery times, or by helping researchers find new drugs and methods to treat serious diseases such as cancer. HISTORY & OBJECTIVES OF RESEARCH AT SOUTHEAST TISSUE ALLIANCE Southeast Tissue Alliance established the Research Department in May 2000. The initial objective of the department was to recover and utilize tissue from donors who did not meet current transplant criteria, but whose families wished to donate. Southeast Tissue Alliance wanted to increase the donation options for
donor families who wished to donate even if the donor fell outside the
established transplant guidelines. In addition, there was an increase
in requests submitted to the tissue bank regarding needs for research
tissue by a host of individual researchers and research organizations.
With these challenges in mind, Southeast Tissue Alliance developed the
Research Department, setting the goal of optimizing the gift of donation. Tissue requests from individual researchers, institutions and processors are reviewed and evaluated based on legal, ethical and technical considerations. All requests that are initially approved for development and implementation are handled through a standard process of review, which includes the completion and submission of the "Application Request for Human Tissue Recovery." Southeast Tissue Alliance aims to enhance life through the gift of donation while operating under the highest ethical standards. The consent process provides accurate and detailed information concerning donation and recovery that will allow potential donor families to make informed decisions with regards to their opportunity to donate. No recovery costs are passed along to donor families and we strive to deal fairly with all facilities in which a recovery might take place. In addition, our recovery personnel abide by written protocols and guidelines that ensure that each donor receives care and respect. CONTACT INFORMATION Telephone: 352.248.2114 ext. 6625
